Spending up in region

A total of $36.1 million was spent in Marlborough via electronic networks last month, Paymark's monthly figures show.

The electronic payment network's figures showed spending increased by 2.2 per cent in June, compared with June 2011 when $35.3m was spent on their network.

Paymark processes more than 75 per cent of all electronic transactions in the New Zealand retail market.

There were 730,000 transactions in June 2012, up from 720,000 transactions in June 2011.

Nationally, $3648.2m was spent via Paymark in June, an increase of 5.1 per cent from $3648.2 when compared with the same time last year.

Nationally, the number of monthly card transactions in June was 4.5 per cent higher than a year ago.

Credit card transactions increased by 6.6 per cent and use of debit cards increased by 3.9 per cent.

Increased spending was recorded in many aspects of hospitality industry in June, with cafes and restaurants reporting an annual growth of 9.3 per cent. Clothing stores also enjoyed increased spending with an increase of 13 per cent compared with the same month a year ago.
