The senior Blenheim police officer under investigation has been charged with unlawful hunting and is expected to appear in court within the next three weeks.

Acting Marlborough area commander Inspector Richard Middleton said yesterday that a Blenheim police officer has been charged with unlawful hunting under the Wild Animal Control Act 1977. The officer had been found on private land by the landowner.

The Marlborough Express understands this happened near Ward about nine weeks ago.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of a $500 fine.

Inspector Middleton said as the matter is before the courts, police would not be commenting further.

He said earlier this week that the officer involved was still working.
