Bohally Intermediate School pupils have been named finalists in ChildFund New Zealand's young playwrights' challenge, Pens Against Poverty.
Year 6, 7 and 8 classes from around the country submitted scripts for review by judges.
Pupils wrote their own interpretation of the book Mary's Christmas Yarn - a tale of giving to children in need.
As one of three finalists, Bohally Intermediate's script will be considered by the judging panel to become the official script for a play based on the book.
The play will be performed by a cast of professional actors in a one-off performance in December.
Judges recognised the school's use of humour and particularly the use of the animals as central characters.
The Hobbit star Mark Hadlow said the “script has good potential for the stage".
"The construction of the play is well-planned based on the story.”
