Beds at Wairau Hospital in Blenheim have emptied since last week when patients were moved to Churchill Private Hospital to make way for emergency admissions.
A Nelson Marlborough District Health Board spokeswoman yesterday said occupancy had fallen from 94 per cent on Thursday to 73 per cent yesterday.
However, 90 per cent of beds were full in intensive care and the inpatient and acute assessment units.
People with chronic pulmonary disease and the flu on top of underlying illnesses like asthma were needing hospital treatment, she said.
