Speakers inspire devotees at conference

Women recharged their spiritual batteries at the Women of Influence conference at the Marlborough Convention Centre in Blenheim during the weekend.

About 300 women from churches all around the country attended the conference, which included inspirational speakers, optional workshops, prayer and worship and even a little indulgence and shopping.

Organised by a group of Blenheim women, this was the second Women of Influence conference.

Jan Borland said the conference was a forum for like-minded women to connect, be empowered by the inspirational guest speakers and take some time away from family and work.

"It's all about connecting and relationship building, and a good excuse to get together and treat ourselves," she said.

Guest speakers included missionary Marilyn Skinner, an entertaining speaker who led a worship session and inspired the women with her stories from 29 years' work in Uganda.

Lydia McMillan, 16, of Blenheim was so moved by Mrs Skinner's stories, she cried.

"She is amazing. She comes from such a simple background - a small town in Canada - but has changed so many lives," she said.

Rachel Thornton came up from Rangiora to lend her video camera skills.

The biggest drawcard for her was hearing the stories from people who were selflessly making a difference, she said.

"It's inspiring and challenging. Just hearing all these wonderful people's achievements has given me a kick in the pants to try and make a difference myself."
