Two-way street plan 'a puzzle'
Market St should...
Clear signs directing people to carparking would be more cost effective than the Marlborough District Council's proposal to make Market St two-way, Marlborough residents say.
People are confused about the reason for the $70,000 project to make Market St two-way between High and Wynen street, and think the money could be better spent elsewhere.
However, people agree with the council's plan to borrow money to control traffic in Middle Renwick Rd and improve safety at the intersections of Jacksons and Old Renwick roads and Bells Rd and State Highway 6.
Community support worker Vanessa Beck, of Blenheim, said although the Market St plan would work, there was no need for it.
"I wouldn't have to drive around the block to get my coffee from CPR, but the money would be better off spent somewhere else."
The council would need to put up signs to remind "long term locals" about the change, to prevent accidents, she said. "I was in Wellington when the one-way system changed to two-way and there was lots of confusion among people who had been living there for years."
Steve Patzel, who is visiting from Australia, said if the council wanted to make better use of the Wynen St car park, it would be cheaper to put up signs to direct motorists.
Making the street two-way would make it more difficult for pedestrians to get around town, he said.
Simon Cooper, of Blenheim, said he thought the plan was "bizarre" and the council needed to consider its options carefully before digging up the road.
"I just can't see what the advantage is - it makes no sense. These car parks are very well utilised because they are so easy to use - you just drive in."
Making Market St two-way would add to congestion at the T-intersection of Market and High streets, he said.
"It already gets very busy there and it's a very tight space. It will only add to the confusion and the traffic flow."
Another resident did not care if Market St was changed or not, but applauded the council's plan to build roundabouts along Middle Renwick Rd to control traffic at Battys and Colemans roads.
