A 57-year-old Christchurch man was found dead yesterday morning by his wife and son after falling off a balcony at his holiday home in the Marlborough Sounds, police say.

Sergeant Kris Payne, of Picton police, said the man, a sales representative from Fendalton, had been staying at his family bach in Blackwood Bay during the weekend with his wife and son, who is in his 20s. They were due to return to Christchurch yesterday.

His room was on the mezzanine floor of the Queen Charlotte Sound bach, and had an open balcony about three metres high with no railing.

He appeared to have fallen off between Sunday night and early Monday morning, when his wife discovered his body, Mr Payne said.

The family had been staying at the bach, which had no road access, for about 30 years.

Police were not treating the death as suspicious, Mr Payne said.

Police will not release the man's name until all his family members have been informed.
