A Blenheim man had a protection order imposed on him yesterday after he assaulted his partner who was five months pregnant at the time.
George Siaosi Iaopo, 20, pushed his girlfriend in the face twice with an open hand, the first causing her to fall off a chair.
The defendant was also fined $200 when he appeared in the Blenheim District Court.
The court heard how an argument broke out between the couple on August 7 about baby pictures on a social networking site.
That resulted in the defendant pushing his partner in the face causing her to fall off a chair.
The 20-year-old victim started calling Iaopo names until he pushed her in the face again.
Judge Denys Barry said the incident had left Iaopo's partner scared for herself, her three-year-old son and her unborn child.
She had reported 10 separate incidents of verbal abuse inside a fortnight leading up to the assault, Judge Barry said.
The assault had left the victim with a severe headache and redness on her face, he said.
Judge Barry said the assault was at a low level but the escalating level of animosity between the young couple warranted a protection order. Iaopo was also fined $132.89 to cover court costs.
