A Spring Creek fish and chip shop had to close early last night after a vat of oil caught fire.
Two crews from the Blenheim Fire Station were called out just before 5pm to the Spring Creek Dairy and Takeaways shop on Main Rd.
Owner Alasdair Marfell said his mother-in-law had thrown a fire blanket on the vat of oil and his wife had sprayed it with an extinguisher.
Nothing else had been damaged and the shop would reopen today, Mr Marfell said.
Deputy fire officer Dion Partridge said the shop owners did everything right and the fire was contained when the crews arrived.
Blenheim Fire Station crews were called out later for another oil-related fire. They were called at 6.27pm to Rata Pl in Witherlea after a pot of oil caught fire while cooking on the stove.
Mr Partridge said the fire was out when the crews arrived.
