Renwick School pupil Amy Chee can be very proud of herself.

The 7-year-old competed in the Woodbourne half marathon event on Sunday, doing the 5km category and combined her efforts with a fundraiser to help Renwick classmate Sophie Gilchrist.

Five-year-old Sophie is suffering from leukaemia and is being treated in Christchurch.

Amy decided, on the suggestion of her dad, Rob Chee, to get sponsorship for her run to help towards the cost of the Gilchrist family having to travel and stay regularly in Christchurch while Sophie is being treated.

Amy's run, which she completed with mum Michelle Chee and a friend alongside her throughout, raised more than $800, and Sophie was there to watch.

Sophie's father, Brian Gilchrist, said he was very pleased with Amy's initiative and fundraising efforts.

For the record, Amy's time for the 5km event was 54min 41sec.
