Woman injured in trailer crash
Runaway trailer could have killed driver
An 81-year-old Blenheim woman was taken to hospital with whiplash after a collision with a runaway trailer late yesterday afternoon.
Blenheim police and St John ambulance were called to the accident on Middle Renwick Rd, east of Woodbourne at 4.40pm.
Constable Tamati Te-Tua, of Blenheim, said a trailer towed by a ute travelling west from Blenheim detached from the vehicle, crossed the centre line and hit a small car travelling in the opposite direction.
The 81-year-old driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was taken to Wairau Hospital to be treated for whiplash, he said.
He did not know how the trailer had detached from the ute and inquiries were continuing.
The traffic on State Highway 6 was reduced to one lane until 5.20pm, when a tow truck picked up the damaged car.
Police officers diverted west-bound traffic down Bells and St Leonards Rds.
The ute was not damaged and its driver, a woman, was not harmed in the incident.
