Police are concerned for the safety of a 59-year-old former Havelock man whose car has been sitting at the top of the Wakamarina Valley, near Havelock for at least 11 days.

A search and rescue ground crew are looking for David Robert Martin, formerly of Havelock, who has no known address.

Tasman District Police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn said Mr Martin's car was seen at the top of the Wakamarina Valley on Tuesday September 11 and is still there.

Mr Martin may have gone hunting in the area, Ms Dunn said.

Anyone who has been hunting or tramping in the Devil's Creek or Butchers Flat area in the past three weeks is urged to contact police.

Mr Martin is 183 centimetres tall, balding and may have a beard.

In the last conversation police are aware of Mr Martin had told someone he was heading toward the West Coast, Ms Dunn said.
