The Marlborough District Council needs to put in public toilets at Ohingaroa Bay in the Marlborough Sounds, Labour list MP Maryan Street says.

Ms Street, visiting Blenheim yesterday, said it was unacceptable that residents found people using their backyards and the beach as public toilets.

The council last week put a resource consent application to build toilets in Ohingaroa Bay on hold until there was more consultation to turn around opposition to the proposal from some residents.

She thought the council was doing everything right in its consultation to build the toilets.

"The council is now being bullied by people behaving badly," Ms Street said.

Her visit to Blenheim yesterday would be the first of many, she said, as Labour was moving to geographic hubs to ensure regional coverage.
