A 17-year-old man drove his mother's Mercedes from Picton to Blenheim at speeds up to 180kmh early last night, prompting a police chase.
Constable Andrew Holdaway, of Blenheim, said motorists reported a Mercedes overtaking on State Highway 1 on double yellow lines, on blind corners and driving into on-coming traffic,.
A police radar clocked the car doing 180km near Spring Creek and police began following him, he said.
The driver was slowed down by traffic conditions and eventually pulled over near the Opawa Bridge at the northern entrance to Blenheim at 6.10pm where he was arrested, Mr Holdaway said.
The 17-year-old Picton factory worker was arrested, charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, operating a vehicle recklessly and failing to stop.
He was also charged with possession of cannabis and cannabis utensils after police searched the car and found a small amount of cannabis and a cannabis pipe.
He was to appear in the Blenheim District Court today.
