An elderly man was taken to Wairau Hospital in Blenheim after the van he was driving veered off the road and crashed into a ditch in Grovetown on Saturday morning.

The vehicle crashed into the concrete abutment of a culvert at the Vickerman St intersection on State Highway 1 about 8.30am.

Blenheim deputy fire officer Dion Partridge said firefighters had to cut the man out of the van.

Two appliances were called to the scene about 8.45am and firefighters assisted police and ambulance staff, he said.

A passing cyclist called emergency services and said the man appeared to have cuts to his face and body and looked like he was in shock.
