Strong wind gusts proved too much for one northbound truck carrying four empty water tanks on State Highway 1 near Kaikoura this morning.
The truck's trailer toppled over as it went round a corner at the end of the Kincaid Straight, about 10km north of Kaikoura at 10am.
Constable Andy Grant, of Kaikoura, said it was fortunate there were no oncoming vehicles, as the truck ended up coming to rest on the right-hand side of the road. The cab remained upright.
The driver, the sole occupant of the truck, was not injured. He had been on his way to his last drop-off just outside Picton when the accident occurred.
Strong winds had been buffeting the area since about 5am, Mr Grant said.
Two cyclists who had been cycling out of Kaikoura about the same time as the accident had turned back to town, fearing for their safety, he said
