Hail hits Marlborough
One minute it's sunny the next it's like winterKAT PICKFORD
Unexpected strong winds and a hail storm in Picton took business owners by surprise and broke a cafe umbrella this morning.
Le Cafe front of house manager Charleigh Marshall said hail the size of ''small peas'' started to fall at 10.30am, and it covered the ground in a ''thin blanket of snow''.
''It was completely unexpected, it was lovely and sunny this morning with blue skies, then the wind came up and the hail came down, it was crazy,'' she said.
The strong winds blew one of their outdoor umbrellas down the street.
The event lasted for about half an hour and the sun had returned and melted most of the hail within an hour, she said.
Cloudy Bay Viticulturist Jim White said there was a sprinkling of hail on the estate in Jacksons Rd, however it was not large enough to damage the grape vines.
