Jail allows woman a clean start

A Blenheim woman has been jailed for six weeks for failing to do her community work sentence.

Paia Beverly Charlotte Munro, 21, appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Tuesday.

Judge Richard Russell said Munro had been sentenced to 250 hours community work for a series of dishonesty offences in May, but had completed only 42 of those hours.

She had failed to turn up to do the work 11 times and it seemed unlikely she would do the rest, he said.

"You are transient in nature and have what is described as a chaotic lifestyle," the judge said.

Defence lawyer Philip Watson said Munro was a young woman paying the consequence for some mistakes, and a short term of imprisonment would give her a clean slate when she came out to start her life again.
