Year 13 Marlborough Girls' College student Jess Barnes, 18, right, releases her balloon alongside her schoolmates and Marlborough Boys' College year 13 school leavers at Market Place, in Blenheim, yesterday morning as a symbolic gesture for the end of their secondary school years.
About 100 onlookers, including parents, teachers, friends and family clustered around the students as the school-leavers were farewelled by Marlborough deputy mayor Jenny Andrews, girls' college head girl Olivia Sheat and boys' college head boy Jack Keown.
Among the fanfare was a friendly face-off between the two schools, followed by a haka by the boys and a rendition by the girls of the Spice Girls' song Stop Right Now
