Marlborough wine scooped the entire gold medal haul in the sauvignon blanc section in the 2012 Air New Zealand Wine Awards.

Medal winners for the awards were announced today after three days of judging in Auckland last week.

Master of wine Michael Brajkovich, who has been involved with the event for 30 years, led a panel of 25.

Out of 1367 entries from 222 wineries in 17 categories, Marlborough received a total of 331 medals - 46 gold, 99 silver and 186 bronze.

Marlborough wines accounted for almost half of the entries, with 635 wines.

Mr Brajkovich said the standard of entries had remained high, with a good lineup of medals awarded across all classes.

Sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and chardonnay remained the top three "quality wines", he said. However, growers were experimenting with more different styles such as tempranillo, grenache and albarino. While their production was still small, the quality was getting better and better, he said.

Pinot noir received the highest gold medal tally for the fifth year running at 21, followed by sauvignon blanc, 17, and chardonnay, 15.

Judges awarded 97 gold medals in total, 90 per cent of which went to sustainable wines, 183 silver medals and 364 bronze.

The awards continued to focus on sustainability. Entries from 2010 vintage onwards had to be sustainably accredited, Mr Brajkovich said.

A record 92 per cent of entries were sustainably accredited, up from 75 per cent the previous year.

People from Marlborough formed part of the judging panel: Te Whare Ra owner and winemaker Anna Flowerday, Cloudy Bay winemaker Sarah Burton, Lion Nathan winemaking director Ben Glover, consultant and winemaker Oliver Masters, Mud House wine group global sales manager Jack Glover, Indevin winemaker Helen Morrison and winemaker Greg Harris.

The Air New Zealand Wine Awards are organised and owned by New Zealand Winegrowers. Trophy and elite gold medal winners will be announced at an awards dinner in Wellington on November 24.
