Fugitive arrested

Police have arrested wanted man Siale Afuhia Fuapau after he handed himself in at Auckland.

Blenheim police issued a warrant for Fuapau's arrest last week after discovering he had given them false details, which led them to arrest his uncle by mistake.

Fuapau, who is facing deportation, handed himself in to Counties Manukau police on Wednesday and was due to appear in the Manukau District Court this morning.

Tasman region police commander, Superintendent Richard Chambers, said Fuapau had been using his uncle's name to avoid charges of entering a building with intent to commit a crime and resisting police.

He had been living illegally in New Zealand since 2002 and using the false details to avoid detection.

His uncle, Vaiola Fuapau, was wrongly detained in police cells for two nights.
