Girls outnumber boys in champs
Three Marlborough Girls' College teams and two from Marlborough Boys' will be in action as Marlborough hosts the South Island secondary schools junior volleyball champs over the next three days.
As usual, there are more girls teams entered for the annual competition, with a total of 35 teams split into a 16-team first division and a 19-team second division.
MGC A are the only Marlborough side in division one and the host province's top girls team are expected to be serious contenders for the overall title. They are seeded second behind Waimea College A and will play alongside Aranui High, Burnside High B and Timaru Girls' High in pool B.
In division two, MGC Blue (B) are third seeds and face Middleton Grange A, St Andrew's College, Riccarton High B and Kaikoura High in pool L. MGC Gold (C) are seeded ninth and have Otago Girls A, Christchurch Girls B, Mountainview High and Nayland College B in pool J.
The 19 boys teams are all in one division, with the highly promising MBC A side seeded seventh overall. They are set to come up against top seeds Waimea College A, Shirley Boys' High, Nelson College B and Timaru Boys' High B in pool A.
Games get under way at 8.30am tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday at Marlborough Lines Stadium and the colleges' and Woodbourne gyms. All games in girls division one are at Marlborough Lines Stadium, while most of the boys' matches are also there, with MBC also hosting a few games. Apart from the final, all girls' division two matches are at MGC or Woodbourne. Finals are scheduled from 3pm on Thursday, with all three championship matches being played at Marlborough Lines Stadium.
Meanwhile, the week wraps up with the South Island Junior Beach Champs at Lansdowne Park on Friday. Eight pairs of pre-qualified players will contest each of the four categories, year 9 boys and girls and year 10 boys and girls.
