Early Christmas present: Myra Pickering with her brand new Toyota Yaris. She is planning a trip to the supermarket rather than a South Island Road Trip, the name of the promotion run through the Marlborough Express that she entered to win the car.

A Blenheim woman who has won a new car plans on taking it for a spin, but hasn't managed to do it just yet.

Myra Pickering, 84, entered the Fairfax Great South Island Road Trip competition, promoted through the Marlborough Express , in the hope of winning a $2000 Smiths City voucher.

The phone call with the news her name had been drawn from 126,000 entries came as a bit of a surprise, she said yesterday.

"I was in a state of shock, I didn't know what day it was," she said.

The month-long competition started on October 15 and involved collecting 28 stamps from any Fairfax newspaper in the South Island and sticking them on a special game board.

Mrs Pickering said she didn't usually enter competitions but the craft aspect of this one appealed to her.

"I don't know why I entered this one - it was like my second childhood, cutting and pasting," she said.

She was in Christchurch earlier in the week to collect the $25,290 Toyota Yaris from Miles Toyota.

Her husband drove them back to Blenheim while their son drove the new Toyota home.

She plans to get behind the wheel soon, but is not sure where the road will take her.
