A Blenheim man and his female passenger escaped without serious injury when their car collided head-on with a truck south of Kaikoura yesterday.

Police said they were very lucky.

Sergeant Julian Lewis, of Kaikoura, said the accident happened on a moderate left-hand bend in the Hundalee hills just before 6am.

The car had crossed the centre line before colliding with the north-bound truck, he said. The car was extensively damaged but no damage was reported to the truck.

The car driver, a 34-year-old man from Blenheim, escaped with minor injuries and his female passenger was uninjured.

The truck driver was also unhurt.

Fatigue may have been a factor in the crash, Mr Lewis said. Police inquiries were continuing and charges were likely to be laid, he said.
