Two occupants of a car which collided head-on with a truck south of Kaikoura on Monday morning are very lucky not to have suffered serious injury, according to police.
Sergeant Julian Lewis, of Kaikoura police, said the accident occurred on a moderate left-hand bend in the Hundalees just before 6am. It is believed fatigue may have been a factor in the crash, although police inquiries are continuing, said Sergeant Lewis.
While the car, which crossed the centre line before colliding with the northbound truck, was extensively damaged, the car's driver, a 34-year-old man from Blenheim, escaped with minor injuries. His female passenger was uninjured, as was the truck driver. There was no damage reported to the truck.
Sergeant Lewis said charges were likely.
