Sauvignon blancs shine
Marlborough continues to dominate the New Zealand sauvignon blanc scene, with the top 10 sauvignon blancs in a recent Cuisine magazine tasting all hailing from the region.
The top sauvignon blanc from the 2012 vintage was Auntsfield's Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2012, followed by Rapaura Springs' Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012, and Saint Clair's Pioneer Block 2 Swamp Block Sauvignon Blanc 2012.
Tasting panel chairman John Belsham said winemakers had had better years.
"The sun hardly shone last year . . . but autumn provided a get-out-of-jail-free card and in the end there was no shortage of flavour for the 2012 vintage."
He said the overall success of the vintage was reflected in the numbers: from 237 entries, an "impressive" 53 wines achieved four stars or more, out of a five-star rating system.
Auntsfield winemaker Luc Cowley said yesterday he and viticulturist brother Ben Cowley were delighted.
"We knew we have a really good wine that we were proud of this year, but we were still absolutely thrilled and just blown away."
