Picton has free wifi as of noon yesterday covering parts of the foreshore and High St.
However, only the first hour is free and then users have to buy access.
Marlborough District Council mayor Alistair Sowman said he was pleased to have the wifi up-and-running before Christmas, in time for Picton’s summer visitor influx.
Contractors Network Tasman Limited and The Pacific.net had delivered the system within a very tight timeframe, Mr Sowman said.
‘‘I would like to thank them and the property owners who have allowed us to install the equipment on their sites.’’
To buy further internet time users had to look for a wifi site called FreeSpot and follow the instructions, Mr Sowman said.
He hoped the free wifi would relieve some of the pressure on the Picton library.
The wifi system was on the same network as the crime prevention CCTV system being operated by police, Mr Sowman said.
The CCTV system was operational as well and proving useful to Picton police, he said.
The same system will be installed in Blenheim in early 2013 and credit will be transferable across the network
