Construction of theatre ready to begin
Supporters of the new Marlborough Civic Theatre have been given an early Christmas present in the form of a yellow storage container.
The container was moved on to the site for the new ASB Civic Theatre, next to the Clubs of Marlborough in Blenheim, on Friday morning as a sign that construction is ready to begin on January 7. The Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust and building company Robinson Construction finalised the building contract and plans last week.
Although other site buildings would be moved on to the site in preparation, theatre trust chairman Kevin Moseley said they decided to wait until the start of January to begin work to minimise disruptions for Clubs of Marlborough patrons during Christmas.
The container was a sign for the public that work was finally beginning, he said.
"We're pretty bloody thrilled to be under way. It's been a long time coming; 2005 was when we first decided we were going to do something about it."
The start of work on the site also marked a new phase of fundraising for the trust because many backers had been keen to see the project started before committing their funds.
"There's a whole lot of people who wanted to see something on the site and under way before we go back to them. "
Robinson Construction was announced in September as the preferred tenderer to build the theatre and has been working with the trust refining the building plans.
Robinson Construction owner Phil Robinson said the theatre was expected to take 22 months to complete.
