Spending up on last Christmas
Marlborough shoppers increased their spending slightly in the week before Christmas, according to Paymark figures released on Christmas Eve.
Spending in Marlborough was up 3.6 per cent on the same time last year, from $15.1 million to $15.6m. The spending rate in Marlborough for the 21 days ending December 23 also increased by the same rate, up 3.6 per cent from $37.9m during the same period last year to $39.3m this year.
Paymark processes about 75 per cent of all electronic transactions in New Zealand.
Nationwide, spending was up 3.6 per cent in the week leading up to Christmas. Spending was up 3.4 per cent year-on-year for the 21 days ending December 23.
Paymark chief executive officer Simon Tong described the results as a "healthy finish" to the Christmas period.
