A thief has stolen about $3000 in cash from a Department of Conservation honesty box at the Cowshed Bay camp site in Kenepuru Sound.

Sounds area manager Roy Grose said staff were "gutted" by the theft of money which would have been used to improve conditions for campers at self-registration sites in the area.

The padlocked box had not been damaged when the money was removed, Mr Grose said.

The money had been taken on Thursday night, when the area was hit by a storm, which could have made it easy for the person to remove the cash and slip away unnoticed.

The box held more money than usual because of the number of campers using the site during the holidays and the person who collected the cash had been unable to get there for a few days, Mr Grose said.

Anyone with information about who could have taken the money, especially if they had camped at Cowshed Bay that night, should ring the DOC Sounds area office on 03 520 3002 or the Picton police on 03 20 3120.
