Seven sheep that had been shot dead were found near the summit of the Taylor Pass on Sunday, say police.
The sheep had been taken from a paddock down the road and shot in the head.
It is believed they were killed overnight on Friday or Saturday last week, said Constable Andrew Holdaway, of Blenheim police.
The carcass of one of the sheep had been removed and the head left behind, Mr Holdaway said.
Blenheim police are investigating the incident.
