A woman and child have been airlifted to hospital after a head on crash near Havelock this morning.

The woman was driving south on State Highway 6 in a white commodore and is believed to have crossed the centre line near Havelock, ricocheted  off an Isuzu tanker truck and crashed head on into a TNL truck.

Firefighters worked for 20 minutes to cut the conscious woman out of the car.  She received injuries to her body after her legs had been trapped between the dashboard and seat.

A four-year-old boy who suffered moderate injuries and the 29-year-old woman who is in a serious but stable condition were airlifted to Nelson Hospital by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, said St John team leader Jon Leach.

The accident caused traffic delays on both sides of the town on the road between Havelock and Nelson. One lane reopened just after 9am.
