A judge dismissed the jury selected to preside over the trial of a Blenheim man on a charge of assaulting his former partner just four and half hours into the trial.

Brent Arthur Robert Thompson, 30, appeared before Judge David McKegg in the Blenheim District Court yesterday for a trial that was scheduled to take two days.

Judge McKegg dismissed the jury shortly after Thompson changed his plea and admitted a charge of assaulting a female.

At the close of the trial, Judge McKegg simply described the relationship between the complainant, the accused's former partner, and the accused as "troubled".

Thompson is due to appear for sentencing in the Nelson District Court on March 26.

Earlier this week, another two-day trial at the court was abandoned and the jury sent home. Details of that trial were suppressed so as not to affect a potential future trial.
