Extra police will be on duty as Marlborough gears up for two festivals this weekend.

Constable Andrew Holdaway, of Blenheim, said a team of about 30 police would be on duty, including 11 from Nelson.

The Tasman traffic alcohol group would arrive from Nelson to operate at least one vehicle, known as "the booze bus". The Marlborough Highway Patrol would also be keeping an eye on the alcohol levels of drivers in town.

People needed to remember to drink in moderation and be sensible, Mr Holdaway said.

"Eat, drink water, stay hydrated and look after yourself and your mates," he said. "It's a festival; it's not about getting drunk."

He warned people to take it easy during the day if they planned to go out at night.
