A Mt Pleasant man was caught drink-driving on Christmas Day after going to recover Christmas presents from his crashed car.
In the Blenheim District Court yesterday, engineer Kapene Luke Riwaka-Clarke, 21, admitted driving with a breath alcohol level of 562mcg (legal limit 400mcg) and was fined $500 and disqualified from driving for six months.
Police said Riwaka-Clarke was driving on SH1 near Koromiko about 3.15am on Christmas morning when he swerved to avoid debris from a slip and crashed.
A friend took him home. He took his parents' car and went back for his presents, when he was stopped by police.
