STAR: Clara van Wel performs during the Classic Hits Winery tour.

Fresh from recording her debut album in Auckland, Clara van Wel is spending a fleeting few days back at school in Blenheim before embarking on a month-long nationwide tour with some of New Zealand's best known homegrown artists.

The 15-year-old winner of New Zealand's Got Talent will perform as the opening act in the Villa Maria Winery Tour, beginning this Saturday, with Fat Freddy's Drop, Anika Boh & Hollie and The Adults, featuring Jon Toogood and Julia Deans.

Clara spent 10 days recording songs for her yet to be named album in Auckland, before finishing up on Friday and returning home.

"It's good to see them come to life," she said.

The 11 songs, narrowed down from 22, were about being in love for the first time and being young.

But Clara said she had yet to write about love from real experience.

Since arriving home, much of the focus for the year 12 Marlborough Girls' College student has been on schoolwork. Being at school was particularly "grounding" for her, she said, following a heady few months since her dramatic rise to stardom.

"It's quite grounding, it reminds you you've still got certain things to do," she said.

"I'm just the same person - I've just been given some really amazing opportunities that I'm really grateful for, and I can't wait to make the most of this opportunity I've got now, touring around the country with all these amazing artists."

Sorting out schoolwork to do while touring, taking a few chemistry tutorials at school and watching the Titanic film with her best friends had been top priorities before heading away again.

Despite missing a whole month of school, Clara was excited about heading on her first "real tour" and getting to know the other musicians.
