A Wellington man flown to Nelson Hospital after the car he was in hit a tree and flipped near Canvastown on Monday is in a stable condition.

St John team manager Pete Davidson said the 44-year-old man had serious injuries to his head, neck and chest.

The accident happened just before 6pm on State Highway 6.

The man was heading from Nelson toward Havelock.

He was the only person in the car and had to be cut out after he became trapped when the car ended up on its roof on the road.

A hospital spokeswoman said yesterday afternoon the man was in a stable condition in Nelson Hospital.
