A man has admitted a charge of attempted murder after he slashed a man's throat in an incident in Nelson's Washington Valley in October.

Steven Keith Pengelley, 39, of Wellington was arrested in Picton on October 14, 2012 and appeared in the High Court in Nelson yesterday, admitting charges of the attempted murder of a Nelson man, and two of threatening to kill in relation to an incident in Wellington.

A charge of blackmail he also faced in relation to an incident in Wellington was thrown out.

Pengelly was charged after Washington Valley resident Mark Wells had his throat slit at his home in October and staggered bleeding into a nearby dairy.

Pengelly will be sentenced on March 19.

Mr Wells told the Nelson Mail that following the throat slashing he feared he would die. He remembered lying in a pool of blood beside the toilet in the bathroom of his Washington Valley flat, one of three apartments in a dilapidated old villa, before staggering to the nearby dairy.
