Sports clubs, workplaces and other community groups are being encouraged to take part in the The Top Team Marlborough challenge next month.

The event is based on Top Town, a hit television show in the 1980s and early 90s, and is organised by Sport Tasman and Marlborough District Council.

The day features familiar games with a "Top Team twist", said organiser and Sport Tasman assistant adviser for youth, Hayden Bryant.

The focus is on fun, friendly competition, getting dressed up in "sevens-inspired" outfits and giving your all in a host of challenges such as "giant slingshot", "gumboot gauntlet" and "minefield", Mr Bryant said. "The cool thing is anyone can compete in it," he said. The $80 cost of entering an eight-person team was cheaper than buying movie tickets.

Teams of schoolchildren from years 4 to 8 would compete in five-minute challenges during the morning, and those aged 12 and over would compete in the afternoon.

Last year's event drew 21 teams, including the Blenheim roller derby team Boomtown Brawlettes, a Nativity Youth Community Centre crew and a Blenheim Indoor Cricket Club group.

While entries had been slow, Mr Bryant expected a last-minute rush of registrations.

Top Town Marlborough is at Lansdowne Park, Blenheim on Sunday, March 17. Team entries are $80 each. Entries close on Monday, March 11.
