The Nelson Marlborough rescue helicopter was called in for two women injured during a Waka Ama outrigger canoe regatta at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes on Saturday.
A spokesperson for the helicopter rescue service said the helicopter was dispatched to pick up a 34-year-old woman from Nelson who had suffered a suspected spinal injury, and a 55-year-old woman from Dunedin who had suffered chest pain.
Both were assessed and treated by the helicopter's on-board intensive care paramedic, with assistance from doctors at the scene and an off-duty St John paramedic, before being transported together to Nelson Hospital, by the Nelson Marlborough rescue helicopter.
