Picton policeman hurt

A Picton Police Officer was taken to hospital this morning with serious facial injuries following an incident at the Picton Police Station about 9.15am.

The officer had arrested a man for disorderly behaviour and taken him into the police cells. As the officer was taking the handcuffs off the offender he was attacked.

Other staff came to his assistance and the offender was restrained.

He will appear in the Blenheim District Court tomorrow charged with disorderly behaviour and with intends to injure, wounds. 

The front door of the police station was locked when an Express reporter visitied at 10.30am and a police lock-up van arrived not long after.

The station is in Broadway, at the south end of High St, the main street through the retail area.

According to Picton residents, three ambulances had been called to the area shortly before 10am.

However, two ambulances were at St Joseph's School nearby, where St John paramedics had been called to treat a child with an existing medical condition.
