The fire service is reminding people there is a total fire ban in Marlborough after responding to a spate of callouts where people were burning rubbish in their backyards.
Blenheim chief fire officer Rob Dalton said people were not getting the message that a total fire ban meant cooking with charcoal barbecues and lighting fires in braziers and drums were prohibited.
"People are lighting fires when they should not be."
Gas barbecues were the only acceptable outdoor cooker, he said.
