In court for hurting policeman
The man who attacked a police officer in the Picton police station appeared in the Blenheim District Court this morning charged with disorderly behaviour and wounding with intent to injure.
John Wright appeared before a JP this morning and was remanded in custody to appear again in the Blenheim District Court on Monday.
He was represented by a duty lawyer, Rennie Gould, who said she advised the man to stay in custody till Monday when he could get a lawyer to represent him.
Picton police said on their Facebook page that the injured officer was recovering at home after being attacked by an offender at Picton Police Station on Thursday.
''We are very grateful to our brave watchhouse officer Mary and an off duty policeman who came to the officer's assistance and restrained the offender.''
It is understood the injured police officer has serious cuts to his face, but no broken bones.
The attack happened after the man had been arrested on Thursday morning for disorderly behaviour and the officer was removing handcuffs from him in the station's holding cells.
The man lashed out at the officer's face, causing the injuries.
