A 7-year-old boy is in a stable condition in Wellington Hospital after an explosion on a boat in Waikawa Marina on Sunday.

Capital and Coast District Health Board communications adviser Lindsay Davis confirmed last night that the boy remained in the hospital. His 42-year-old father who was also on the boat had been discharged.

The Wellington pair suffered moderate injuries when their boat exploded after it had been refuelled. The child is understood to have suffered a serious cut to his foot from debris which went flying in the explosion, and his father injured his ankle.

The explosion is believed to have been caused by a faulty fuel ventilation system that trapped vapours on the boat and sparked when the engine was started. The launch, which was towed up the marina's launching ramp and parked in a Port Marlborough compound after the incident.
