A truck driver died behind the wheel from a suspected medical condition on State Highway 6 near Pelorus Bridge on Saturday.

The 52-year-old man was driving back to his Blenheim depot about 11.30am after making grocery deliveries in the Motueka and Nelson area.

Havelock police Senior Constable Maurice Horne said the man slumped in his seat and his foot came off the accelera- tor.

A work colleague sitting in the passenger seat was able to take the wheel and steer the empty truck to a safe stop, Mr Horne said.

No other vehicles were involved and the cause of death was yet to be determined.

The refrigerated truck stopped about one kilometre on the Blenheim side of Pelorus Bridge, Mr Horne said.

St John paramedics tried to resuscitate the man at the scene, he said.

Havelock St John ambulance and the Summit Rescue Helicopter attended.
