Star Wars fans in Blenheim were out in "force" on Saturday to recognise international Star Wars Day, May the Fourth [Be With You].

A Star Wars-themed pool party was held at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 in honour of the ground-breaking sci-fi movies. The party was organised by the Marlborough Youth Trust.

Children dressed up as popular characters, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Princess Leia, before ditching the fancy dress and making a splash.

Party organiser Paul Humphreys said the Star Wars theme was a natural choice as the last Saturday of the school holidays was May 4.

Self-confessed super-fan Aaron Powell, 11, won the best costume award for his Obi-Wan Kenobi get-up. Aaron got the costume, with light sabre, as a birthday present two years ago, he said.

He had watched all the movies and couldn't wait for another to be made. His favourite character was actually clone trooper Commander Cody for his close combat fighting skills.

Friends Kathryn O'Donnell, 11, and Jessica Marino, 10, were both dressed as Princess Leia.

They weren't massive fans but didn't want to miss out on a party. Their fancy dress options were fairly limited being girls, they said.

Spencer Lane won the best Wookie impersonation.
