The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was called to an injured motorcyclist on State Highway 63 in Marborough.

A motorcyclist has been injured in a head-on collision in Marlborough

The motorcycle was heading west through Wairau Valley, on State Highway 63, when it crossed the centre line about 77 kilometres west of Blenheim.

It collided with the front of a classic American car about 3.30pm on Saturday.

Marlborough highway patrol team leader Sergeant Barrie Greenall said the motorcyclist, a 52-year-old man from Tauranga, had serious injuries.

Police, an ambulance, and the Wairau and Renwick fire crews were called to the scene.

The man was taken to Nelson Hospital by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.

It was first thought his injuries were "possibly life-changing", Greenall said, but he later found his injuries were not as serious as they appeared.

The two people in the car were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The Tauranga man was heading west with another motorcyclist, Greenall said.

"Police ask that anyone who saw them and the manner in which they were driving to contact police," he said.

A Nelson Hospital spokeswoman said the man stayed overnight in hospital and was in a stable condition on Sunday afternoon.
