Quake repairs close campground
Slips on the road to Marfells Beach have led to the temporary closure of the popular camping ground near Lake Grassmere.
Yesterday, Renwick-based asset ranger Paul O'Fagan and ranger Pam Ilton closed the road leading to the beach, near the centre of a magnitude 6.6 earthquake on Friday.
Mr O'Fagan said the quake brought down slips, cracked the road, made bridge approaches impassable, destroyed the toilet block and cut water supply.
He did not believe anyone was staying at the camping ground at the time.
Programme and assets manager Jim Herdman said staff would wait until the road was reopened before making repairs.
Asked when that was likely to be, he said DOC did not want to put undue pressure on Marlborough road works.
