The ASB Civic Theatre Trust hopes to raise $2 million by offering supporters the chance to buy a piece of Marlborough history through seat sponsorship.
Trust fundraising manager Ross Anderson said businesses, families and individuals could purchase "a little slice of posterity" at the new ASB Theatre.
It would have more than 700 seats and it was hoped that $2m would be raised through "seat sales", he said.
Each seat will be available for sponsorship and a small naming plaque would be attached.
Various categories of sponsorship would be available, ranging from platinum and gold seats in the upstairs dress circle to blocks of four seats for corporate sponsors and single Gold, Silver or Bronze seats in the lower level auditorium.
Each sponsor would gain preferential rights to their seat, getting advance notice of events at the ASB Theatre and the opportunity to book their "own" seat or seats before public bookings open.
"There are some people here who are such loyal supporters of theatre that I know they will jump at the chance to sit in their ‘own' seat at performances," said Mr Anderson.
"Some people may wish to sponsor a seat as a way to remember a family member. It's a chance to pay a tribute in a way which will benefit our wider community and we believe that will appeal to many families."
Seating plans and instructions for signing up to sponsorship would be released next week.
"It's an opportunity to make a long-term pledge to our new theatre. Seat sponsorship is an easy way for local businesses to show their support for this important community project and to be recognised for that support. It's also a way for us to recognise the many generous individuals and families who are backing the Theatre," Mr Anderson said.
"We're very pleased to be able to assure everyone that the new seats that have been chosen for Marlborough's new ASB Theatre will not only be comfortable but long-lasting so the seat sponsorship will be a long-term acknowledgement of all those supporters."
