Shane Warne bowls into town
Cricket legend visits Marlborough breweryCATHIE BELL AND CLAY WILSON
Australian cricket legend Shane Warne made a flying visit to Marlborough today to visit the Moa Brewing Company.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest bowlers and also famous for his relationship with English actress Liz Hurley, Warne visited the brewery outside Blenheim at the invitation of Moa chief executive Geoff Ross.
Ross said he met Warne a couple of years ago when Warne played in a charity cricket match in Wellington to raise funds for earthquake-hit Christchurch.
"He's a top bloke," Ross said.
As well as Warne giving Ross' children some cricket tips, the company is discussing the possibility of Warne becoming a Moa ambassador in Australia.
Warne was enjoying the Marlborough blue skies and sunshine this morning, saying he'd had qualms about coming over when the pilot said it was -1 degree in Blenheim.
"But this is great," the cricketer said.
"I tried a bit of it [the beer] and it's bloody good. I've never been to a brewery, I've only been to a few wineries, but I've never been to a brewery to see how beer's made and never really understood how it's made. It's interesting to understand how it actually works.
"I've never been here [to Marlborough], but I've played a few times in Nelson.
"It's been great, especially the sunshine, but I don't normally have a beer at breakfast time."
Warne flew out of the region early this afternoon.
